Connie Lenzen, President of the Board for Certification of Genealogists,
announced the retirement of three trustees and the resignation of a fourth,
effective on October 16th. Together, these four former trustees represent
a grand total of fifty-seven years of service on the Board. All have served
as officers.
- Submitting her resignation in September, Helen F. M. Leary, Certified
Genealogist Emeritus, of North Carolina, had served nearly
eight full terms, for a total of 23 years on the board. She
was President from October 1989 to October 1994 and again
from October 1998 to October 1999. She authored The
BCG Genealogical Standards Manual, undertaken with Tom Jones, CG, CGL. Helen
also designed the certification logos used today by the society
and its certificants.
- Elizabeth
Shown Mills, CG, CGL, of Alabama, retired after seven full
terms, a total of 21 years on the board. She was BCG President
from October 1994 to October 1996. Her tenure saw the development
of the BCG Application Guide and the creation and fundraising
for the BCG Development Fund which underwrites BCG publications. Elizabeth
is nationally recognized as the author of Evidence!
Citation & Analysis
for the Family Historian. She conceived, developed and edited
Professional Genealogy: A Manual, a comprehensive textbook of all aspects
of genealogical work. Her most recent publication, QuickSheet
- Citing Online Historical Resources Evidence! Style, is
currently a best-seller on the BCG website www.bcgcertification.org/catalog.
- Kay
Germain Ingalls, CG, of California, retired after ten years
of service on the BCG Board and was the Executive Committee
Member At-Large from October 2001 to October 2004. In addition,
she chaired two crucial committees recommending changes for BCG: the
2004 Nominating Committee that developed term limits for
trustees, and the Single Credential Committee that recommended
the consolidation of the three previous research credentials into one,
the Certified Genealogist (CG). Both of these crucial changes were ratified
before her retirement.
- Linda Woodward Geiger, CG, CGL, of Georgia, was
Treasurer of BCG in 2004 and 2005; she retired after three
years as a board member.
According to President Lenzen, “All four of our out-going trustees
have been committed to promoting excellence in genealogical practice, and
to ensuring that BCG itself grew and responded to changes in the genealogical
world. The Board for Certification of Genealogists wouldn’t be the
nationally recognized and respected organization it is today if it were
not for the individual contributions of each of these able trustees.”
At the October 16th board meeting, the remaining trustees signed certificates
of appreciation for the retirees. The fifteen current members of the BCG
Board of Trustees are:
Connie Lenzen, CG, of Oregon, President
Barbara J. Mathews, CG, of Massachusetts, Vice President

Standards Manual sets forth the currently accepted standards for all areas of genealogical
research.
